A chemist by trade, Gustave Sennelier opened the eponymous shop across the Louvres to provide his Impressionist friends with oil paint first, followed by egg tempera, watercolors and extra soft pastels that every visitor can enjoy on museum walls today. The second shop in Montparnasse coincided with the avant-garde movement and in 1947, his son Henri created the famed oil pastels for Picasso.
